Hey all! 👋
Pranusha & Shiva here 👫 Hope all of you had a great weekend🍹, & are keeping safe! We are back with our 3rd newsletter, covering yet another GHRM study. This study focuses on answering a simple question:
Do GHRM practices (like the ones we spoke about in our 1st issue) even change employee behaviour towards sustainability? Or, are they just fancy PR exercises that drain the org money & do nothing more?
This question is the most pertinent to practitioners like you, isn’t it? Why would you even want to drain org money on something that doesn’t deliver?
Let’s see what the evidence says.
The study:
To answer the question of whether GHRM practices change employee behaviour, the authors focus on 5 component dimensions of GHRM. These 5 GHRM dimensions are:
Green recruitment & selection criteria👔
Green reward & incentive programs🏆
Green education & training programs (like seminars & conferences) 👩🏫
Employee empowerment/upskilling through hands-on green workshops🤹
Active championing of green values by senior management🧑🏻💼
Though the empirical context of the study is China, we do think the study affords us pertinent insights into the impact of GHRM practices in orgs.
The verdict?
Having in place green recruitment & selection criteria, empowering employees via conducting green upskilling workshops, conducting green education & training programs through seminars & conferences, & active championing of green values by senior managers, all positively influence both in-role (tasks mandated by job description) & extra-role (voluntary employee initiatives) green behaviours of employees. Further, all these GHRM practices also increase green information appetite of employees👩💻
Having a system of green rewards and incentives 🏆 in place directly increases proactive & voluntary green behaviour of employees, over & above their call of duty. Now, isn’t this a strong evidence of the impact of a green rewards system?
Lastly, the increased green information appetite due to the abovementioned GHRM practices further gives a positive impetus to the employees to continue the green behaviours they’re exhibiting. That is, GHRM practices breed green information hunger, which in turn contributes to the success of the GHRM practices. Now, that’s a neat closure of the green loop 💫
So what are you waiting for? Start greening your HR practices, & let the magic unfold 💚
Until next time, have a happy, healthy, & safe time creating sustainable workplaces 😁
